Labour Act (Amendment) Bill, 2020 (HB.494) – 09/03/2020

The bill seeks to amend the Labour Act to criminalise casualisation of workers in Nigeria by prohibiting the engagement of casual workers beyond six months. The bill adds a clause to the Labour Act to the effect that every worker shall enjoy full employment benefits as a permanent staff after six months of engagement. It also provides for the benefits to be given to workers and penalties for employers (both individuals and businesses) that fail to comply with these requirements.

The bill went through second (2nd) reading at the House of Representatives and was subsequently referred to the Committee on Labour, Employment and Productivity for further consideration.
