Gas Flaring Bill, 2019 (SB. 174)

The bill seeks to prohibit gas flaring in Nigeria by prohibiting oil and gas companies from flaring or venting gas and requires that gas flaring or venting occurring during appraisal, commissioning and production phases of a development should be kept to the minimum that is technically and economically justified. Flaring or venting without ministerial consent shall attract a fine of at least the cost of the gas flared on the international market.

The bill went through second (2nd) reading at the Senate and was subsequently referred to the Committee on Gas for further consideration.
